Ultrasound Biopsy / Ultrasound Guided Injection

Ultrasound Guided Biopsy
An ultrasound-guided biopsy is used to sample areas in many of the body organs such as the breast, kidney and liver. Ultrasound is used to guide the Radiologist to precise placement of the needle for the biopsy and tissue sampling performed using a specialised spring biopsy needle .

Ultrasound guided injection
A variety of conditions relating to joints and tendons are treated by injection of medication into the tissue responsible for the symptoms.

Precise placement of the injected drug can be obtained when the fine needle is inserted with ultrasound guidance.

Radiology Pre Examination

The patient requires an appointment.
For a liver or renal biopsy the Radiologist will require an INR blood test. The patient will attend the Radiology practice a minimum of one hour prior to the examination  and receive a light sedative prior to the examination.

Patients with a coagulopathy or who are taking regular aspirin or warfarin may required to stop these for a period prior to the examination. Please discuss this with the Radiologist if stopping this regime is a concern.

The patient will be required to sign a consent form. We recommend the patient brings a support person to accompany them and, as patient's having liver and renal biopsies require sedation, a driver or taxi is essential.
