What is ultrasound?
An ultrasound machine uses high frequency sound waves, rather than x-rays, to produce images of the body.
These high-energy sound waves are bounced off internal tissues or organs and make echoes. The echo patterns are shown on the screen of the ultrasound machine, forming a picture of body tissues called a sonogram.
Are there any risks?
There has been no known hazard from ultrasound during its use in medicine for over 40 years, nor is there discomfort with this method of examination.
