The small bowel enema (enteroclysis) is a fluorocopic (real time) xray of the small bowel. The study evaluates structural and functional features. It is invaluable for the investigation of recurrent small bowel obstruction, malabsorption, upper gastointestinal bleeding, inflammatory disease of the small bowel and neoplasia.

The Examination |
Usually takes between 45 and 60 minutes.
A Radiologist and Radiographer perform the examination
A lubricated single use naso gastric tube is inserted using anaesthetic jelly and spray.
The Radiologist uses fluoroscopy to observe as the tube enters the stomach and is moved through to the duodenum.
The administration of Maxalon may assist this process.
The Radiologist will take a series of images under fluoroscopic control as the barium passes through the small bowel.
Some patients will have delayed images where there is delayed transit of the barium, or where limited evaluation of the colon is required. |
