CT - Computerised Tomography

Computed tomography (CT), originally known as computed axial tomography (CAT or CT scan) employs tomography where digital geometry processing is used to generate a three dimensional image from a large series of two-dimensional xray images taken around a single axis of rotation. CT produces a volume of data which can be manipulated, through a process known as windowing, in order to demonstrate various structures based on their ability to block the xray beam.

Although historically the images generated were in the axial or transverse plane, modern scanners allow this volume of data to be reformatted in various planes or even as volumetric (3D) representations of structures.

The CT staff operate the scanner from behind a glass partition with two way communication via an intercom. A light restraint is used to maintain consistent body position.

Some scan sequences require breath holding.   If there is concern that a patient may not be able to manage to remain still or is claustrophobic please discuss this prior to the examination.

CT scans may require a patient to be nil by mouth,  have an injection of contrast medium or a drink oral contrast medium.  These instructions are given to your patient when making their appointment.  If your patient has multiple allergies, uses metformin, has impaired renal function or asthma please refer to the contrast media section, note the relevant risk factor on the referral and discuss your examination request with our staff. Our Radiologists welcome and encourage direct discussion regarding strategies to deal with any contraindications to intravascular contrast media.

Some patients will require prior approval from their medical insurance company.

Currently, ACC Hi Tech CT patients can only be referred by a Specialist or ACC registered GP .

Colostomy patients:

If your patient has a colostomy, please let the reception staff know as the preparation may vary. Please suggest your patient takes 2 spare bags with them.
